Usually files on the Desktop can be dragged to the trash to delete them. This doesn't work for links. They still can be deleted using the "Move to trash" entry in the context menu. However, the non-tech people I'm supporting with their Ubuntu machines seem to struggle with this, not being able to remove links from desktop. They get especially confused by the fact that dragging to the trash works for some "files" but not for others.
