Confirmed on Tribe 5- I think there are two problems to this:

1. GDM ready sound (the drums) is not playing- this I think is because the sound is not set up properly by default. Going to System->Administration->Login Window->Accessibility and choosing the proper sound (question.wav) results in proper behavior.

2. System login/logout sound (and perhaps all system sounds in general?) is not playing, though checking and playing them from the System->Preferences->Sound->System Sounds dialog box works fine.

3. All other sounds (for me at least) work fine.

I am on an Asus A8Jm, Intel ICH7 snd_hda_intel.
