Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Keeps alerting me that files are in process of being uploaded—several hours for less than 19 small files. Never makes any progress.

After a while my computer starts to slow down and the fan starts racing. I run system monitor and discover that the ubuntuone-syncdaemon process has gotten up to 6.8 Gb memory and 75-96% of CPU.

The first time this happened, I disabled Ubuntu One autostart. Somehow it got itself started again and it happened again. So I uninstalled Ubuntu One.

Sorry to hear that Ubuntu One is not working as expected. Thank you for filing a bug on the issue. We would need the client log to start analyzing the problem. Could you please zip your $HOME/.cache/ubuntuone/log/ folder and attach the zip here. You can zip the folder by right-clicking on it and selecting compress. Attach the logs to this bug report using the 'Add Attachment or Patch' button at the bottom of the page.

After you attach the logs you can change the 'Status' of your bug back to 'New'. The status of a bug report can be modified by clicking on the current status in the yellow line, which will reveal a sub menu. You can then set a new status in the drop down box.

thank you,
Lucio.

Been reporting the same bug one year ago to the team. Then the same bug on launchpad. Some others have similar problem:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntuone-client/+bug/872080

This seems bug number one to me as not only it makes ubuntuone usable, but it makes the computer unusable too.

It's the same in the previous Ubuntu release, and it's the same on at least two different computers. My last computer got an SSD disk and an i5 core but it sill hangs when ubuntuone is running.

This was my posting for bug # 879 696 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntuone-client/+bug/879696) - Which I classified as a duplicate of this...

UbuntuOne Sync Daemon consumed 100% of available RAM (6.9 GB of 8.0 GB) As a result the machine went into SWAPPING thrash. Clicking 'Restart' in the UbuntuOneControlPanel had no effect.

Unfortunately, the Swap memory went up to 45% before I was able to open LaunchPad, so the attached information reflects the state of the machine after system reboot ~ rather than at the time of the incident. However, I have attached some screen-shots I WAS able to capture before the machine tanked.

Because the Ubuntu One process runs as a background daemon and cannot be ended without killing the process it seems like it should be immediately classified as Critical/Urgent/Total Platform Killer.

Happens to me too, on up-to-date Oneiric, running Unity. Seems to make no progress while uploading files (small ones) and ends up consuming all available RAM.

Ubuntu 11.10 amd64 here. I synchronized my eclipse workspace with ubuntuone and ubuntuone-syncdaemon is eating all of the memory now. Upload speed is very low, ~1 MiB per hour.

This bug makes one of the most advertised features of ubuntu unusable, furthermore it makes all of the system unresponsive. I think this bug is very critical.

My ~/.cache/ubuntuone/log folder is attached.

Concur. It has been classified as "Undecided" since 2011-05-06. Just guessing, but I think it is because the initial bug description is "gobbles memory". Sounds so harmless.
  .

If we could change the description to something accurate of our current understanding of the problem... "Memory Leak Crashes Entire System" ~ I bet somebody would at least classify it.

Interesting thing is there are many other bug reports about the same issue, e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+bug/380533. And almost all of them are in fix released status.

I was trying to sync my encrypted .Private folder. I tried to umount ecryptfs first (ecryptfs-umount-private) then synchronize it. It seems like the daemon's memory usage is stabilized at ~500MiB and it is actually uploading. It uploaded 36 MiB until now using the same amount of memory. Maybe it is a inotify issue. Because I know that there is some issues about ecryptfs and inotify.

@Slugius you are right about the bug name. Are you also using eryptfs? Can you confirm the behavior I observed? Maybe we can open a more precise bug report after confirmation.
