Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

On https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/jeos-and-vmbuilder.html, in the "Partitioning" section and the "Install a Local Mirror" section where code/input/output is exhibited, there are portions of the code/input/output that extend beyond the boundary of the box. For the sake of aesthetics, the code/input/output should wrap inside the box, so that all of it is contained with the box.

Similar to bug #590519. What would be a possible solution for this? how can we wrap a long command line script?

It is possible that wrapping the line will cause the data in the section to become invalid or otherwise improperly formatted which is worse than the current problem. Maybe we can modify the template so that those sections are given horizontal scroll bars if the text does not fit in the allotted space.

The Ubuntu Documentation team has moved the serverguide out of the ubuntu-docs source, it is now under the serverguide project. This bug could also affect commands in ubuntu-docs desktop help as well, so I'll leave it open under that package.

I was hoping to tackle some of these type of issues in the serverguide over the next few days. I have done some experimenting so far. I don't see a problem with wrapping commands via adding, or moving the placement of, the command continuation cahracter "\" for commands. I also don't see an problem with just changing line break locations in <programlisting> segments, as for the most part there are line breaks there already, just in the wrong spot. Am I missing something? I am willing to assign this to me and get on with it, within the much bigger scope of the whole document.

The string changes can be made manually for commands, we just don't have an automated way to do it. You're welcome to make the modifications yourself, but there is no guarantee that in the future the default width of html pages won't change. IIRC, the same problem appears when viewing in yelp which is still a problem for ubuntu-docs.

For the most part this is fixed in the 12.04 serverguide, but there are currently 3 exceptions for larger excertions beyond the boundary and few more very small ones.

The particular example mentioned is fixed in 11.10 and later.
