Ubuntu 9.10 Windows Equivalents refers to Pidgin instead of Empathy

In the official Ubuntu documentation, under the section Ubuntu equivalents to Windows programs at URL https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/switching/applications-equivalents.html, it states that the equivalent of Windows Live Messenger is Pidgin, and provides additional resources for accessing and using Pidgin. Pidgin has been replaced by Empathy in the default install of Ubuntu 9.10, and so the documentation should be updated to refer to Empathy instead of Pidgin.

Thank you for your report. It is true that Empathy is the default IM client in Ubuntu now, and that is documented in the "Instant Messaging" section of "Internet and Networks". Unfortunately and as far as I can tell, Empathy IM Client is not available for Windows. I think we need to keep something here for IM clients, and don't see a requirement that this section needs to only include applications that are installed by default in Ubuntu. On that note, GIMP is listed but also won't be installed by default in Lucid.

Does anybody have objects to closing this bug as Won't Fix? Other ideas on how to proceed?

Is it a requirement that the programs listed here, should also be available in Windows? If so, then Totem, Rhythmbox, and F-Spot should also be taken off of the list.

It is my understanding that the purpose of this list is to help new Ubuntu users become familiar with their new environment, post-install. To this end, it is my view that the most useful, and least confusing option would be to stick as closely as possible to the programs that are installed by default.

I'm not sure what should be done about the reference to GIMP in the Lucid documentation.

That is a good point, otakuj462, seems that I overlooked the fact that they don't all have download links. Thanks, I will make the change to Empathy here.

We can deal with GIMP (and the greater question about default programs in Ubuntu) separately. I've added it to my task list.
