Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

I'm looking for a description of the currently available groups to determine whether to add a new group or use an existing one for a udev rule in a package in universe (wminput). I can't find any and mpt suggests they might not exist. Debian-policy mentions vaguely how numbers and groups correspond, but nothing seems to list the currently existing groups and what programs use them.

This is documented here:

  /usr/share/doc/base-passwd/users-and-groups.html

(If ubuntu-docs wants to document this in any way that people are in danger of regarding as official :-), it should link to this rather than duplicating it. base-passwd is Essential so this document is always installed.)

Searching for "groups" in the help viewer does not find that page -- and neither even does searching for "Users and Groups in the Debian System". So it's not fixed in a way that most people would find.

Linking to this page would be great, but it's not linked at the moment, and probably the page would need to be cleaned up so that people would be confident it actually applied to Ubuntu, not just Debian. (Perhaps the order of the chapters should be reversed, too.)

I'll figure out how we can reference the document Colin mentioned from the system docs.

Fix committed to Lucid dev branch for ubuntu-docs. I'd like to request the base-passwd maintainers to clean up the document here:
   /usr/share/doc/base-passwd/users-and-groups.html
which we linked to, so that it at least mentions that it is applicable to Ubuntu. Matthew Thomas also suggested that it be re-organized a bit as well. Thanks for your consideration.
