Automatic login is highly discouraged because it provides less security for your system. Also take care when in the Login Settings application as there are options which may prevent Ubuntu from logging in or starting properly.
Located in keeping-
The window title of gdmsetup now says "Login Screen Settings"
And now on, the description of enabling automatic login is outdated, as the window for this was simplified a lot.

What we should have instead, approximately:
- Push the Unlock button
- Select the radio button next to Log in as
- Select the name of the user you want to allow automatically log in from the dropdown next to Log in as
- Optionally, you can allow some time for others to login ("timed automatic login") by ticking the checkbox next to Allow, and set the time in the spinbox.
We're in string freeze for karmic. I've committed a fix for this for lucid in revision 374
