Installer would only install to / if it could reformat

I wanted to do a clean install on a disk with media on it already that I did not want to have formatted, the installer of ubuntu-6.10-desktop-i386.iso during step 5 or 6 did not accept / without selecting reformat. The only directories on the disk was /root and /home . The ubuntu-6.10-alternate-amd64.iso worked when I kept /home and /root and the ubuntu-6.06-desktop-i386.iso (dapper) did also work. I had to install dapper again and upgrade to edgy.

I'm not sure what's going on here. Could you go through in more detail what you did?

You had a previous installation of dapper and you wanted to update to Edgy using the live cd?

You found that it wouldn't let you install over the top of your dapper installation so you installed using the ubuntu-6.10-alternate-amd64.iso?

You then installed dapper again and then upgraded to edgy (how?)

You also had a problem with grub?

using the 32bit desktop 6.10 iso I could not install to a disk already
formated to ext3 containing *only* /root and /home without selecting
the reformat switch.

on my other desktop, I installed the 64bit alternate 6.10 iso under
the same conditions and it worked perfectly.

therefore the problem might be isolated to the desktop isos. the
problems happens on the last screen where you have to select the "/"
and other points where partitions are mounted, and where you tick
reformat.

I think there are many people who would like a clean install and to
keep their /home intact. I have 60G on the 80G disk that I dont want
erased.

I would like to second this. Recently, I installed Kubuntu Edgy on a machine which had Gentoo on it up until then, and a collegue installed Ubuntu Edgy on his former Mandriva machine. In both cases, we initially tried to install without removing the old distribution, then we tried removing everything except /root and /home, and finally we had to reformat the partition in order to install.

The symptoms were as described above. It would be nice to be able to cleanly switch another Linux distro to Ubuntu.

switching while keeping /root and /home was possible in previous
versions, possibly just an if statement gone wrong, think the
alternate installation allowed me to switch, possibly just the desktop
isos which are affected.
