I'm performing actual hardware installs.

I used the default Unity desktop with this hardware:

JetWay JATOM-GM1-230-LF Motherboard
Intel Atom 230 CPU @ 1.60GHz
System Memory 2GB DIMM
Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics
Intel N10/ICH 7 Family High Def Audio Controller

Two hard drives, a WD 80GB IDE and a WD 500GB SATA.

And it was running the true default unity desktop amazingly well, which tells me most of my Unity complaints require a fresh install ;^/

Just going to go for a manual partitioning install w/screenshots so I'll see if it's a continuous problem.
