Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I observe this problem running trying to install from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/ports/daily-live/20091007/karmic-desktop-armel+imx51.img on a Babbage2 board, but it's not clear whether the problem is platform-specific.

Once the installer has stuck at 80% (see attached ubiquity.xwd.gz), ubiquity and Xorg consume about 80% CPU between them*, and otherwise the CPU is idle with no other processes appearing to progress.

The problem appears completely reproducible; I cannot successfully install. I've been able to install from previous images prior to daily-live/20091005 without problems, and I'm following the same procedure as before.

Ethernet is connected physically, but the interface is not configured up -- this might or might not be relevant. I believe there is an outstanding kernel/NetworkManager issue preventing the Ethernet interface being brought up automatically on this board right now.

(*This may just be the effort of animating the progress bar :/ ... this can be an issue sometimes -- see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gparted/+bug/378990; though I doubt that is the cause of the installer hang here... after all, install did manage to get quite a long way.)

Hi,

same here 80%, during configuring apt.

07/10 daily ubunutu-netbook-remix on an Asus 1005HA.
Happens every time, whether from Install only or an Install through a Live session.
(Even if net is up in live session, and it works, I can browse on it.)

Best,

Nicolas.

This is due to changes in apt-setup which the desktop CD installer does not support yet in its debconf implementation.

I am glad to hear this bug has been fixed. I installed karmic-moblin-remix-i386.iso instead and it complained of a issue with the apt-configuration but gave a error and was able to proceed to a finish, I had the same issue as reported here but i made a different
bug report for my initial report..https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-remix-launcher/+bug/445932; I will try again later to install karmic
remix..

I just tried installing 9.10 Netbook Remix version after loading Live CD, and it is hangs at the screen which gives you option to erase entire hard disk, largest continuous space ...

When I opened a terminal to see which process was stuck it was ubiquity, at 80%.

When I decided install without going into live CD, the partition screens opened fine and got through to installing it.

Note the installation was on as Asus EEE PC using a USB stick

ubiquity hangs at 80% means when configuring apt not when partitioning. and also if you disconnect from the internet during installation it won't hang or stuck at 80%. i think the ubuntu servers are so busy now a days due to recent release of karmic and when it stucks at 80% its scanning the mirror i guess

I chose to skip the configuration step and after that I was unable to autentichate myself, even though I typed the right password (I chose to prompt for password on login but I didn't choose home directory encryption). I don't know if that's related to this bug, but after reinstalling offline I don't experience the issue anymore.

Can you still push this fix in the LiveCD? If the issue is indeed related, it would be a huge turnoff for new users.

In my case, with the final karmic i386 CD, I just disabled the (wired) network interface, and installation was able to go beyond 80%.
After that I enabled it again but download of additional languages estimated to more than 3000 hours, so I had to skip this step (disabling the interface was less effective this time).
That way installation seemed to finish successfully.

I think this bug does exist on Ubuntu.
I solved it with this work around.
The problem relay on the router MTU settings for the pppoe default DSL service (Ethernet, DSL and Cable Broadband
Connections).
Is necessary to change the MTU in 1492.
You can check to MTU with the command
netstat -i eth0
You can change the MTU with the command
sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1492

To solved once for all this issue you should change this settings (MTU 1492) in the router configuration.

Just adding that this bug is also present in Kubuntu 9.10 amd64, so that installer is affected as well. Total install time was over 90 minutes for me due to the waiting at the 80% mark.

Ran into the same bug, on kubuntu netbook remix.
I for one think it warrants a re-release of the .iso, since everyone will hit by this bug. Just threw in the freshly downloaded .iso, clicked 'install', and there it hang. Really must not happen. It will turn off/away >90% of the uninitiated.

It points to 2 quality issues in Ubuntu, aside from the existence of this bug:

1. We've had exactly the same with some earlier release; when network needed to be disconnected for the install to run through. Things may go wrong, but not all the time ... .

2. It is only common sense, to define time-outs. At least for non-essential parts of the install process.

(3. Even a failed apt-configure must not consume 80% of CPU or whatnot is mentioned further up.

4. 'Skip' must actually do what it says.)

Lousy job, sorry.

That's right. Of course I have no personal interest in fixing this since I read the release notes and know how to use Launchpad, but Ubuntu is also supposed to target new users who have never installed an OS before.

Colin Watson (cjwatson) wrote :

It's actually almost certainly just in the middle of downloading. I can see in the debug log that it's busily *trying* to emit progress messages about what it's doing, but those progress messages are vanishing into thin air. I think we need a more complete implementation of the debconf DATA command to fix this.

This bug still is reproducible even with the 10.04 lucid's alpha 3 iso I just downloaded from

The only change is now that it hangs at 79% (was 80%).

Full text:
Configuring apt, Retrieving file 15 of 28.

When running dpkg -l ubiquity (from VC1), I see the ubiquity version is 2.1.27.
"top" shows ubiquity has 162 Megabytes of VIRT memory (55 RES), and Xorg and ubiquity are the only programs using CPU.

/sbin/ifconfig eth0
shows that the MTU is set at 1500; with scp I tried to copy a 10MByte file, and that works OK (and fast).

I did this while installing ubuntu netboox remix inside a Virtual box (Version 3.1.4), that runs on a WinXP machine. This way I also reproduced the 9.10 "80% configuring apt" hanging (4 times in a row the 9.10 install hangs; the 10.04 I've only tried once).
The network settings from VirtualBox were all set at default (NAT, etc).

An update to my previous problem report:

The problem most likely is the transparent http proxy at my work that blocks some files (but not all).

When doing a lucid install with the network disconnected everything was OK. But then running
  aptitude update
caused aptitude to get about 12 files, and then stopping while trying to get the 13th file.
Configuring my own proxy made the problem go away.

I also meet this bug when I install Lucid's beta 1 (64 bits) to my Dell Studio 1535. I download the ubuntu-10.04-beta1-desktop-amd64.iso file and burn a CD, full installation.

I turn on my Wifi, before starting to boot and install Lucid. My experience shows me that way to get my wifi card drivers from the CD smoothly.

Then it hangs at 79%.

After waiting for long, it still keeps on retrieving ... of ... at 79%. I google around and read the comment of Joosteto #34. I try switching off my Wifi button to disconnect from the Internet. Wow it works! I could get though it and the installation was Ok.
