What disappeared exactly? We will need more information on your problem. Specifically what kind of disk it is, the SATA chipset or motherboard model.

Please attach /var/log/installer/espresso to this bug.

The bar telling me that it was formatting the disk got to 100%, then the progress box just disappeared, leaving me with a lovely view of the desktop.

The Hard Drive is a Seagate ST380817AS Barracuda 80GB 7200RPM SATA/150 with an 8MB Cache.

The motherboard is an ASRock (K8NF4G-SATA2) Socket 754 nVidia GeForce 6100 Chipset/nVidia nForce 410 MCP Chipset.

(/var/log/installer/expresso is on its way)

Thanks for the quick responses.

Can I remind you about the log file? You said ten days ago that it was on its way, but I haven't seen it yet. Thanks.

Any chance you could reproduce this with 'ESPRESSO_DEBUG=1 sudo espresso', and get the log? Sorry, I should have asked for that before. Make sure to use a throwaway password, as in debug mode the password will appear in the log file.

Alternatively, please try with the Dapper Beta 2 release. That should either work (we can hope ...) or else give you a useful traceback of the crash, which you can then paste into this bug report.

It could be, but without a debug log or a traceback in either case I cannot tell.

Has the log been forwarded in the meantime? Just to be sure, I'm attaching my /var/log/installer/syslog (not espresso!) to this bug.

My desired setup:

hda3 64MB ext2 /boot
hda5 1GB swap
hda6 13GB jfs /

These partitions already made with Knoppix, I'm asking Ubuntu installer to reformat them. The partitioner/installer then seems to do this, then suddenly quits.

Henk, your problem is bug 39734, and should be fixed in Flight CD 7.

It seems likely to me that this bug is the same basic problem, so I'll mark it as a duplicate. mrxoliver, if you can still reproduce this crash, please reopen this bug. Anyone else, please file a new bug if you experience similar symptoms rather than reopening this one.

It seems there's more to it. I've just tried to install Flight-7 with the install-CD, but it too choked on my preferred partitioning. It gave "warning messages" about the existing NTFS (Windows XP) partition not having parameters to Windows' liking (I had made that partition with PartitionMagic). To top it off, the computer froze solid while configuring xserver-xorg...

I've now used installed Dapper succesfully from Beta2 plus updates, letting the installer wipe the whole disk and install a single ext3 root partition and a 512MB swap partition. Beats me how I can get either Ubuntu installer to give me what I want: small ext /boot, a jfs root partition, and a 1GB swap partition.
