espresso log file contains a few errors, notably the /dev/sda3 swap stuff.

Same problem. Had a previously setup partition table from a Breezy/XP dual-boot machine. Got through all of the dialogs and hit "Install." It appeared to create fresh ext3 partitions on the ones I said to format (/boot, /). Then it said "Starting Partitioner" again, and exited without any message. Later inspection reveals that the installer successfully reformated the indicated partitions, but died before putting anything on them ... :)

Possibly relevant machine specs are:

MB: ECS RS480-M
HD: Seagate Barracude 250GB

Is there a good way to add several files to a comment?

During the dialog process, this screen shows the partitioner step. I only attached it because some of the Kubuntu folk couldn't get to this step.

I need somebody who suffers from this problem to run espresso with 'ESPRESSO_DEBUG=1 sudo espresso' and attach the resulting log. (Make sure to use a throwaway password, as the password appears in the log in debug mode.)

Changed in espresso:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

I could not run the espresso with ESPRESSO_DEBUG=1 sudo espresso, so I tried to figure out what was going on. I decided to install the gtk frontend for espresso, and when I did that, running the previous command works, in fact it seems like it is installing. I don't know if this helps any, however it may.

True-night: our live CD comes with all the necessary pieces already installed. I *really* wouldn't recommend trying to install it on some other kind of system unless you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of exactly what you're doing.

Yeah I learnt about the DEBUG option last night, will do that today.

Trent, any luck with getting that debug log?

This could possibly be a duplicate of Bug #39348

It could be, but without a debug log or a traceback in either case I cannot tell.

Unfortunately I have been unable to get back to this machine (its actually someone I knows) to do this

I'll let you know when I can

I encounter exactly the same problem with dapper 6.06 beta2 live, as Scott explains when I try to use the custom patitioning function.

This really does look like a duplicate of bug 39734. Trent, if you can reproduce this with Flight CD 7 or newer, then please let me know and we can investigate further. Thanks.
