the comment by fsstar worked for me as well (thank you!). I've now got a 640x480 usplash, which is much better than a blank screen.
Additionally, I found after making the changes the machine failed to shutdown the first time around, it didn't even respond to SysRQ commands. However, this problem has not re-occured since, and I think it was just down to some system inconsistency immediately after altering the usplash settings.
