None of the three workarounds here (startup-manager; usplash.conf; orange2k) work me. Graphics card is an nVidia GeForce 8600 GT running on a Dell 2405FPW display at native 1920x1200. System is a Dell Inspiron 530. I also had this problem with Fiesty and the Gutsy install (64bit) was upgraded from this.
