Compaq Presario v5015us Gutsy fixed by changing resolution in usplash.conf and updating initramfs.

changed /etc/usplash.conf (yres had been set to 1024):

# Usplash configuration file
xres=1280
yres=800

Ran update-initramfs:

sudo update-initramfs -c -k all

Please note that when I changed resolution in usplash.conf and rebooted it still did not work. I had to update-initramfs to resolve.
