I also had this black screen during boot.

There's some debate on the "vga=791" option not properly working for Gutsy. I removed it and this happened to work for me:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=8d6cb6c2-79d8-4e49-ac5d-9ad8f2d3df42 ro quiet nosplash

I disabled splash because i want to see the boot messages. But maybe this also work with the "splash" option set.
