I was experiencing a similar problem. Finally got the ubuntu logo and progress bar to show on boot and shutdown, but if I press ctrl+alt+f1 I am presented with a blank screen with a flashing _ cursor - ie no login prompt. Is this related, if so, any ideas for fixes?
