The CD/DVD is ejected fine and the screen is cleared to a text console, then after a few steps, it hangs.

This is a duplicate of bug #1190170. It's fixed in proposed-updates. I've just been using sudo reboot.

This is different from #1190170. The computer starts to shut down but does not finish.

This also seems to affect the Ubuntu GNOME images.

Shutdown is blocked waiting for some processes to terminate.

Seems to also effect Lubuntu 20130626 amd64, but I did not see it testing i386. That said I tested amd64 on different hardware than I used for i386. I'll follow up later.

This is truly a horrible picture but I found that if I press Esc while frozen I get this screen.

Still happening with alpha2 candidate images. System is hung with the following message:

I've found this on the PowerPC Desktop image from 2013-08-24 as well. When the installation finishes and the option to reboot is chosen, the system eventually hangs. Not even the consoles are available nor does the mouse pointer move.

Apparently hitting enter unblocks this in most cases...

Lars Noodén (larsnooden) wrote :

Tim, hitting enter on the PowerPC install is not an option because the system locks up quite thoroughly. Does hitting enter work on i386 and AMD64, if so this may be a separate bug.

It seems to still be there in the 2013-09-30 Desktop amd64+mac disc image. The installation went fine but not reboot. Had to powercycle.

@Lars

Yesterday, I have installed Lubuntu 01-10-2013 amd64 (saucy) from LiveUSB Created by UNetbootin on P4 with less than 512MB RAM and it did reboot but the problem is, there is no message asking you to remove the media and press enter to reboot.

It seems on the LiveCD, it fails to reboot. But, I never use LiveCD any more.

I wonder if these two issues are related somehow?

@Lars - is this all on the same hardware? An inability to reboot can be hardware specific.

On other hardware (PPC) it fails to eject the CD and locks up.

If it fails to eject altogether then this is likely NOT a duplicate.

Bug #966480 has only to do with being presented by a blank screen when you should see a message indicating to "remove installation media, close tray if any, and press enter".
