Bug Description

In Ubuntu Dapper Development Release (2006-01-15 update),

without modify any parameter in the "Removable drives and media" preferences [so opening the DVD with the 'totem %d' command, as default]....if you insert a DVD in the DVD drive the DVD is correctly mounted but totem cannot play it with terrible "Cannot play Disc: no reason" message...!

The DVD playback instead is correctly done with gxine and mplayer.

Same issue both on totem-gstreamer and totem-xine.

Thanks for your bug. gstreamer-dvd has not been ported to gstreamer0.10 yet, that's a known issue, but it should work fine with totem-xine. Do you have any message on the command line if you run totem from it? Could you turn /apps/totem/debug with gconf-editor to get a debug log when running totem too?

ok. perfect, but the issue, as reported, is still present both with
totem-gstreamer and totem-xine.

I.E. This is the verbose debug of totem-xine opening a DVD, hope to be
useful, even if seems tobe all ok:

Thank you for the log. Does reading a DVD from the totem-xine menu works fine or does it return the same error? Does it happen with all the DVDs or only one?

Well with totem* no DVD can't be opened or read yet (libdvdcss and no
libdvdcss protected), but with gxine all DVD playouts are ok.

With mplayer, instead, there's no menu reading: the dvd id automatically
played (no possibility to jump to menu)

I just wanted to say I've got the same problem since a couple of weeks (maybe from 1.3.0). I don't have any problem with gxine either. It reproduces with all DVDs. The console's output is only two debug spews of gtk groups, nothing to do with the playback. If I get some chance, I'll try to debug that.

Seems the drive type is not retrieved correctly... Typing totem dvd:// as a temporary workaround works great btw.

Thanks for your bug. What value do you have to system, preferences, Removable Drives and Media for the DVD playing option? The default now is "totem %d" but it could use dvd if the user key has changed before. I've opened a bug upstream about that: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331568

It used to be "totem %d" but I changed it to "totem dvd://" to get working dvd auto-playback. If I understand the bug you (Sebastien) filed correctly, it sounds like you're saying that "totem dvd://" does not work for you - is that right?

Just to be perfectly clear, for me the situation is:

Does not work, gives me "Totem unable to play this disc. No reason" :

totem /dev/hdc
totem /dev/dvd
Selecting "Play disc" from the totem Movie menu
-------------
Works:
totem dvd://

That bug is not clear and people are probably listing different issues too. Using "totem dvd://" probably works if you only have one drive on your box. What version of totem do you use? gstreamer0.10 has no dvd element yet so it's normal it refuses to read a DVD. The message is confusing but that has been fixed upstream and we have the fix before dapper so no worry about it. What other issue do you have?

With totem 1.4.0-0ubuntu1 on amd64, using the command `totem /dev/hdc` the message is now:

"Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it.

Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media."

Note that if there is no disk in the drive, the message is (after totem closes the drive - if the tray is out):

"Totem was not able to play this disc.

Please check that a disc is present in the drive."

If there is an unmounted disk in the drive, totem ejects it then gives the first of the two messages above.

If the drive tray is open with a disk in it, the tray is retracted, then the message is:

"Totem was not able to play this disc.

Failed to find mountpoint for /dev/hdc"

That last message is also strange for a newbie - should this go on the same bug, or should it have it's own?

The "No reason" error message comes up even when using totem-xine is installed. But going to Movie-> Play disk will make the movie play fine.

Feisty & Feisty+1 give a lot more understandable messages to the user about the causes of the problems (ie. missing codecs, offering installation of them). Also the gnome-volume-manager starts totem properly. (Not causing some of the mentioned errors at all.) The original issues reported in main and duplicates should be definitely fixed.
