I tried what Gabriel Ruiz suggested and the command didn't work--sudo
dpkg-reconfigure thunderbird. Nothing happened and the command line
just came back up. Maybe there should be more in the command.
I have 2 computers (se text above) the other is a windows xp. It is
having the same problems both with Thunderbird and Firefox. I can't
access the help desk in either.
