I tested today with:
- thunderbird-19.0a1.en-US.win32.zip
- a existing thunderbird 16.0.2 profile
- at Window XP
- and Zarafa 7.1.1 IMAP-Gateway
- LAN connection

Results are:
- TB downloaded the messages (~300 in several subfolders) now only one time
- The messages are offline available
- No growing mbox files
- Later TB crashed sometimes when I deleted are moved messages...
