Bug Description

Binary package hint: software-center

Running Lucid 10.04 on a USB stick built from 3/22/2010 daily builds. The md5sum was verified. Using Ubuntu Software Center, I am able to install one package with no problem. I then immediately try to install a second package. This second install seems to complete. However, Ubuntu Software Center freezes up. I have to force quit the application. The second package is verified to be installed. I verified this several times.

1. lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release: 10.04
2. apt-cache policy software-center
software-center:
  Installed: 1.1.17
  Candidate: 1.1.17
  Version table:
 *** 1.1.17 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3. I launch Ubuntu Software Center to install a number of software packages. I expect to be able to install each package without the application freezing up.
4. I launched Ubuntu Software Center. After installing the second package, the application freezes up forcing a force quit.

Can you please try the latest software-center/aptdaemon in lucid ?

With
software-center 1.1.21
aptdaemon 0.111+bzr342

I can no longer reproduce the freezes.

I retried installing packages using the versions of Ubuntu Software Center and aptdaemon as you suggested, and I was not able to reproduce the problem. I installed severn or eight packages with no freeze-up. When I retried using the versions from today's build (Software Center 1.1.20), the problem was still present. Please let me know if I can be of any more assistance.

Hi Joe. That's great news; thank you for testing this and reporting back so quickly.

I can also report that with the package versions that Michael cited above (in comment #4) I can no longer reproduce this issue. I can install/remove multiple items, click around the UI freely, with no freezes. Based on the results that are being reported I'll close as fix released.

Many thanks for the fix, Michael!

I too noted when I tried the updated software center that it was fixed. Cause for celebration!

This bug is not fixed.

I am still experiencing this bug, and have been for the past year or longer.

I am using Ubuntu Software Center 5.0.2.

My computer:
Ubuntu 64-bit
AMD Phenom X4 9550 2.2 GHz
6 GB DDR2-800 RAM
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5670 1 GB GDDR5 via DVI; driver: fglrx (details below)

[ 106.807] (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.88.7
[ 106.807] (II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: 8.881

I don't think it's my hardware. I also had this problem on my laptop, which is made by a completely different company, with much older parts, 1 GB of RAM, Pentium Mobile....etc
