Often, but randomly, software-centre hangs and freezes (grey window).
Crash in question for example happened after installing & uninstalling 7zip, and then simply clicking around a bit.

In reading your description, I believe that that you are seeing is a manifestation of the problem details in bug 514879. One effect of that bug is that some views in Software Center take a very long time to render, with the resulting grey screen that you observe. I'll mark this one as a duplicate of that.
