Just a little addition for Comment #21

If you intend to use the Software Center to install "GDebi Package Installer", do it BEFORE attempting to install "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" via the Software Center. Once you enter the failed state associated with "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" installation, you are toast.

If you have spent any time in the windoze world, you would have created an image before trying to install something; restored the working image if/when the installation failed; and then experimented to find a work around. Being more robust, Linux does not warrant those extra steps when dealing with open source. However when dealing with proprietary software one must expect the occasional "vista" experience.
