I'm not sure from your description if Shotwell is segfaulting or it's entirely Unity. One thing that might help: Run Shotwell from a terminal window like this:
$ SHOTWELL_LOG=1 gdb shotwell 2>&1 | tee shotwell.gdb
At the gdb prompt type this:
(gdb) run
When Shotwell crashes, you should be at the gdb prompt. Type this:
(gdb) backtrace full
Then exit. If you could attach the shotwell.gdb file to this ticket that would be helpful.
If the crash is so hard it kills the terminal window and/or gdb (I've seen both in earlier revisions of Unity), then it's a larger problem than Shotwell.
