Good to know, I tried it with a Nvidia system.

Jim Nelson (yorba-jim) wrote :

I'm not sure from your description if Shotwell is segfaulting or it's entirely Unity. One thing that might help: Run Shotwell from a terminal window like this:

$ SHOTWELL_LOG=1 gdb shotwell 2>&1 | tee shotwell.gdb

At the gdb prompt type this:

(gdb) run

When Shotwell crashes, you should be at the gdb prompt. Type this:

(gdb) backtrace full

Then exit. If you could attach the shotwell.gdb file to this ticket that would be helpful.

If the crash is so hard it kills the terminal window and/or gdb (I've seen both in earlier revisions of Unity), then it's a larger problem than Shotwell.

For the record, my machine is running Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (not a Netbook, however).

cant get the backtrace because as unity crashes gnome-terminal crashes too due to bug 633303

Omer: you can run unity from a terminal with mutter --replace --mutter-plugins=/usr/lib/mutter/plugins/libunity-mutter.so under gdb. Think to install debug symbol of course :)

I managed to trigger such a crash (by removing missing images from the library), but it only worked once. Cropping still doesn't do anything else than cropping the image. Will keep trying with gdb attached.

bug 642669 and this might turn out to be the same. (I can reproduce both) in both cases clicking on a dialog from the main window crashes unity.

Vish (vish) wrote :

@Omer , didrocks mentioned getting a *gdb* and running that command under gdb.

have a look at: <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Generation> ,
From a desktop session, you have to start gdb with:

 gdb mutter 2>&1 | tee ~/gdb-unity.txt

and then in the arguments is :
(gdb) run --replace --mutter-plugins=/usr/lib/mutter/plugins/libunity-mutter.so.0

and as didrocks mentioned , we need to install the debugging symbols

Neil J. Patel (njpatel) wrote :

Omer, would it be possible for you to test the indicator-appmenu branch that is linked from https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/642669 ? I think it solves this bug too.

Hmm, that's the exact bug this branch should fix, did you install into /usr ? It needs to overwrite the appmenu.so installed in /usr/lib/indicators/3/libappmenu.so and then restart Unity.

You know what? I just realised how this bug report is different, sorry!

Can you please do the gdb thing again, but this time, when it stops and you are at the gdb prompt "(gdb)", type in "bt" and press enter, and paste the output here please so I can see the stack and figure out where it crashed. If we can get that I think I can fix it pretty quickly, thanks!

Omer Akram (om26er) wrote :

the problem is when unity crashes in gnome-session (if started through gdb) system dies i.e. nothing can be clicked just the cursor moves so I have to kill X thats why previous logs were incomplete.

Vish (vish) wrote :

@Omer , pls read : <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace#Generation> and all the steps..

the backtrace will be generated as a file, you can just attach it to the bug report. the comments can get way too long ;)

@Omer, you can try to ssh into the session too.

Vish (vish) wrote :

@Omer , If ssh is not possible, you can try what i did for similar problem > https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/616997/comments/34

While running gdb, i noticed same problems, of no cursor.. so try copy-pasting.. its crude but worked ;p

Omer Akram (om26er) wrote :

the logs that I attached previously were copied from the text file generated by gdb.

if I was not clear: if I run unity from gdb with 'run --replace --mutter-plugins=/usr/lib/mutter/plugins/libunity-mutter.so.0' on a second or third attempt to crop an image in shotwell. system freezes i.e. no clicks are taken into account everything is like a still image just the cursor moves so I have to kill X. thats why I am not able to get a backtrace. I am googling for other methods to get a backtrace. I might find one ;-)

Neil J. Patel (njpatel) wrote :

Ah, okay sorry, this is the way you can get a backtrace for Unity without ssh etc:

- Use your Intel system
- Switch to VT1
- login
- export DISPLAY=:0
- export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=libappmenu.so
- gdb --args mutter --replace --mutter-plugins=libunity-mutter
- At gdb prompt, type 'r' and then <enter>
- Switch to VT7
*** Cause the crash, system will stop responding but mouse will keep moving ***
- Switch back to VT1
- At the gdb prompt, type "bt" and <enter>

That should give you a full backtrace. Instead of copying it over, you can just take a picture of the trace with a camera and attach it to this bug, i just need to see the exact point of failure.

I hope that helps!
