Bug Description

Binary package hint: shared-mime-info

I saved out test files for every format that MS Word 2007 supports saving and used gvfs-info to report what it thought about each file. It seems that most of them are not supported for detection yet. I will attach a zip file with all formats MS Word 2007 can save out to:

These need to be improved for certain:

example - single file web page.mht : text/plain - application/octet-stream
example - word 2003 xml document.xml : application/xml - application/xml
example - word 97-2003 template.dot : application/x-ole-storage - application/octet-stream
example - word 2007 macro-enabled template.dotm : application/zip - application/octet-stream
example - word 2007 template.dotx : application/zip - application/octet-stream
example - word 2007 xml document.xml : application/xml - application/xml
example - works 6.0 - 9.0.wps : application/x-ole-storage - application/octet-stream

The following could be improved by subclassing them, but it might not really be too big of a deal...

example - web page filtered.htm : text/html - text/html
example - web page.htm : text/html - text/html

I will also have additional bugs for Access/Excel/PowerPoint file formats.

Thanks!

Chris Cheney

I marked this as confirmed, since I too can reproduce this issue. However, I believe this is going to be addressed in Open Office 3.0. This should most likely be marked as a wish-list item.

Er this isn't going to be addressed in OpenOffice 3.0, the mime info is missing from shared-mime-info, OpenOffice 2.4 can already open most of these file types if the shared-mime-info was setup right to begin with.

Doesn't openoffice have to list the formats in its .desktop files but shared-mime-info has to know how to recognize the file also or the file won't be opened via eg nautilus since Gnome won't know what kind of file it is to begin with?

@cris
I think that I understood your idea: the objective is "know" what file is. "Work" with the file or "open" this file is a openoffice's ( koffice, abiword etc) problem ( a big ooxml problem - ISO raped :)

Yes without proper identification the various programs can't register (via .desktop files or /usr/lib/mime/packages) that they can open the document and actually have it work.

Sorry I originally misunderstood.

I see your point, and I agree this is a bug. Thanks for all the clarification.

Hi, should we mark this linked bugs as duplicate off bug #138252 or viceversa? it seems that this set of bugs are being worked on??

Also, should i put here the icon-theme bugs also?

i'm thinking that the bug#138252 is a dup from this one...

also, wouldn't be nice if we consolidate all this bugs into this one (making the description adjustments off course)
