This issue seems to be very sporadic. I finally remembered to run the command when the applet reported 0C

This occurred after I unplugged my backup hard disk. It is an internal SATA disk (the WDC WD400BEVS seen above) and no file systems from it were mounted when I unplugged it. I was able to get correct output from the applet by removing the applet from the panel and adding it again.
