This issue seems to be very sporadic. I finally remembered to run the command when the applet reported 0C

dan@harvest:/var/lib/dpkg$ netcat localhost 7634
|/dev/sda|WDC WD400BEVS-22LAT0|ERR|*||/dev/sdb|SAMSUNG HD321KJ|41|C|

This occurred after I unplugged my backup hard disk. It is an internal SATA disk (the WDC WD400BEVS seen above) and no file systems from it were mounted when I unplugged it. I was able to get correct output from the applet by removing the applet from the panel and adding it again.

Thank you.

I should also add that I am using a custom-built kernel (2.6.24.7 from kernel.org), so if this is a kernel issue, I understand that the Ubuntu devs probably don't want to troubleshoot it. If it does come to that, I would like to see if I can reproduce the issue using the Ubuntu-provided 2.6.24-16 amd64 kernel before we close the bug. Thanks again.

I'm using a new motherboard which does not exhibit this behavior. I believe it is a problem with the old motherboard's BIOS/ACPI. You can close this one.
