Yeah, well I know that you shouldn't, me neither, but it is very likely that this bug exists precisely because of that. Back in 2017 June, one guy submitted this workaround to RedHat https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1458903

If you are affected by the same issue, then at least 3 bugs in this 'sane-backends' backlog could be merged into one - less clutter, more clear reason, affects more users, more chance to get it fixed faster.

That really doesn't sound like an easy (and not frustrating) solution. I'm currently doing roughly the same but instead of booting another OS, I turn on my other PC with Debian, which seem to work (which also has a little older version of the libsane package).
