I am experiancing this as well. I can nearly 100% of the time access the shares by using smb://192.168.1.10/ for the XP box, and smb://ubuntu/ for the local box and the shared folders come up.

If I use places-> network servers I get the "Windows Network" icon but a blank screen further on. Sometimes the shares show up fine in Nautilus.

Konqueror can see the shares fine.
