Bug Description

Binary package hint: samba

There is enough response on the Dapper forum that, while not everyone is experiencing this problem, I am not alone.

I used to be able to access Windows XP shares and the Windows XP box could access the Dapper shares, but after Dapper daily updates last week Samba has become totally broke.

When I try to access the Dapper shares via “Start->My Network Places”, the Dapper shares do not display.

When I try to access the Dapper shares via “Start->My Network Places->View Workgroup Computers”, the Dapper machine icon displays, but when I click on it, it fails with a “The network path was not found” error dialog box.

When I try to access the Windows shares from Dapper via Places-Network Servers, the Windows Network icon is displayed but when I click on the icon, the dialog box window clears to a blank and the shares do not display.

/etc/smb.conf is generic original except that I have added a share at the bottom (via the GUI). The workgroup is the same name as the XP box, “MSHOME”; security-user; netbios = alvin.

Remember – all of this worked correctly prior to last week’s Dapper daily updates.

Because some people have indicated that they are successfully using Samba with Dapper I have attempted another try at fixing it.

1. Using Synaptic I totally removed, including configuration files, ALL packages dealing with Samba. The packages removed were: samba, samba-common, libsmbclient, smbclient, smbfs, libgnomevfs2-extra

2. I rebooted Dapper and verified that /etc/rc?.d/*sambs, /etc/initd/samba, /etc/samba/* were all gone.

3. Using Synaptic I added only samba and samba-common and repeated attempts to access Windows shares and visa-versa. The results of accessing Dapper shares from Windows had the same “The network path was not found” error. Accessing Windows shares from Dapper resulted in a "smb:/// is not a valid location." Error. This error is why I originally added libgnomevfs2-extra.

4. I tested printing to the Windows XP shared printer and it, once again, wasn’t working. So, I next used Synaptic to add back libsmbclient, smbclient, smbfs and libgnomevfs2-extra. Then I rebooted Dapper.

5. Now the Windows XP shared printer works but access shares to/from is back to the original problem – Windows reports “The network path was not found” and Dapper shows a blank dialog box when I click the “Windows Network” icon at Places-Network Servers.

6. Windows shares can be viewed via Firefox with "smb://192.168.0.102/", yet only a blank screen results from looking for the shares via nautilus’s “Places->Network Servers”.

7. I went to "Places-Network Servers", then clicked on the Windows Network icon, which, as before, showed a blank display. Then I entered a control-L on the blank display and the address line showed "smb:///". I then inserted the IP address of the window box into the proper spot in the address line, i.e., smb://192.168.0.102/, and it correctly displayed the Windows XP share icons. This is a manual fix as the screen remains blank when I repeat the process. Nautilus, or nmbd isn't resolving server names?

8. I have the problem all of the time (now) but others on the forum indicate that it is intermittent for them “jalonsom: This is really a weird problem. I hadn't realized earlier because I have permanently mounted all the shares I need so they work OK:

I have seen that sometimes I can do Network>Windows network>workgroup so I can see the servers present, but trying to open one leads to the error described.

But other times I can do Network>Windows network>workgroup and I only see the local computer (browsing local computer always works)

And at other times I can just do Network>Windows network and a blank screen appears. This is what celem described.”.

Similar problem here.
Definately related to name resolution in samba as I can see samba servers and shares in nautilus when usind IP addresses.

Well, now I can add myself to the "intermittent" category. I consider Samba to have problems, but, for now, my windows shares are working. How they came to work again is not reassuring. I have been using the same Avaya Wireless Gold 802.11 card for months. I have not changed the card during the period that Samba shares worked or after they broke. However, today, while working on a friend’s old Windows 98se laptop, I needed the Avaya Wireless Gold 802.11 card to put into his laptop because his old machine wouldn’t physically accept any of the other WiFi cards that I had (32 bit Cardbus vs 16 bit PCMICA issue). Anyway, has the 16-bit PCMCIA configuration (small tab) so I pulled it from my Dapper machine and put it into the windows laptop and then plugged a Linksys 32-bit cardbus WiFi card into the Ubuntu box. Miricles of miracles, Dapper Samba shares started working again!

I am not comforted by this bit of magic – I still think that something is wrong with Samba.

I am experiancing this as well. I can nearly 100% of the time access the shares by using smb://192.168.1.10/ for the XP box, and smb://ubuntu/ for the local box and the shared folders come up.

If I use places-> network servers I get the "Windows Network" icon but a blank screen further on. Sometimes the shares show up fine in Nautilus.

Konqueror can see the shares fine.

I am also having a very similar issue. I upgraded from Breezy to the 6.06 LTS RC and since then Nautilus will not display the contents of my Samba share. The Samba server I am trying to access is on another Ubuntu Linux box, which currently is running Breezy. Please see my post at:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=186393

As I mention in the post, Nautilus seems to resolve the Samba server name and the share, but just fails to display the contents. Also mentioned, is that I can access the Samba share via smbclient and through mounting usign mount -t smbfs. This seems to be some weird Nautilus problem, maybe because I updated to Dapper RC and didn't do a full install. I will do a full install on another test machine and see if it will work.

I upgraded from Kubuntu Breezy to Dapper and now Samba sharing does not work. If I try from Konqueror I get 'The process for the smb://tucker protocol died unexpectedly' If I try smbclient it segfaults

To follow up to my previous comment, if I use an IP address instead of host name I can connect using either Konqueror or smbclient.

Further testing has shown that Samba hangs on trying to resolve the hosts file. Eliminating hosts from the resolve order allows smbclient to do name resolution. In Konqueror using the Samba Shares link is still a bust. However entering //hostname/servicename directly does work. Also using Add a Network Folder to create a network folder works. Is seems the problem lies in whatever program is called by Samba Shares.

No the problem I am seeing is not related to bug 65136. The problem still remains as I have detailed it in previous posts.

I confirm this bug. Using ip instead of hostname works.

Gutsy, after "security" update to 3.0.26a, no longer access shares via XBMC. I can sometimes view the shares, but never gain access. "Error 1073741772 share not available" message, and nonsensical messages claiming I deleted the share. After a year no fix or explaination? This does not inspire confidence.

Confirmed on Ubuntu 7.10.

Also note that the workaround of connecting to server manually allows access to Ubuntu shares via Samba in Mac OS X 10.4, but not in Windows XP Home SP2.

Do you still have this issue ?

Could you try to connect the share with smbclient from the command line ?

  smbclient //SERVER_NAME/SHARE_NAME

As I stated previously using smbclient //SERVER_NAME/SHARE_NAME worked. The issue is with the GUI interface to Samba Shares. At this point the whole issue is pretty much moot with the release of 8.04 LTS

I also ran into this same exact problem; Samba shares worked without a problem from Ubuntu 7.04 and upgrade to 7.10. Some relatively recent patch(es) in about the April timeframe broke the connectivity. I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and the problem is still occurring.

I was able to get a partial solution by using webmin to work on the smb.conf file, suggesting to me that this might be partially configuration related.

I only have a partial solution as I have multiple shares and am now able to access 3 of them (drives in NTFS format, moved over from Win2K system; root/root owner/group 755 permissions) are working. The other shares are consistently giving a Windows network access error (ext format, fred/fred owner/group 755 permissions).

Like a number of other people I have removed and reinstalled Samba in various configurations.

Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find out what additional work should be done on this bug.

Unfortunately, this bug remains the same and is experienced by many, but not all people. See the Ubuntu forum:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=784259

Although there is a workaround of modifying the LMHOSTS line in smb.conf that will permit access to the shares, it is VERY SLOW yet a windows machine accesses the shares so fast that they seem local. This isn't a Ubuntu issue as I have experienced it on other distributions as well.

hi guys just thought i'd add my findings.
i was getting the "Error -1073741772: share not available" when trying to access my shares after an update some months ago. I noticed today that shares could be accessed if they where ext2 or ntfs but if they were vfat then it wouldn't work.
Formatted one of my drive to ext2 and it works fine now.

yes on default install on my toshiba laptop smb-client doesn't see windows network - works sometimes on wired.
resolved the issue by installing samba (not just the client) so I assume the client is missing a file or has a permission problem or the conf files are different.
