Bug Description

Right-click on mp3/ogg file, select "Open With Rhythmbox Music Player." Application opens but does not play. Clicking on "Play" button produces window error message, "Couldn't start playback (null)." Clicking on "Play" button a second time produces a different window error message, "Couldn't start playback - Failed to create playbin2 element; check your GStreamer installation." Expected mp3 files to play normally as they did with Rhythmbox on 11.10 Oneiric prior to upgrade. Can still play these audio files ok with VLC media player.

Adding terminal output from:

~$ sudo lshw -C sound; dpkg -l |grep gstreamer; dmesg | egrep 'rhythmbox|callbacks'

as text file.

Removed application via Ubuntu Software Center and re-installed along with available free add-ons, but issue remains.

Launching application from terminal produced info in attached text file. Note that the first two lines of messages in this file only appeared after re-installation.

The issue has been solved for me by using the same fix as in post#3 here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gstreamer0.10/+bug/770158

Directory in question can be deleted from the terminal with:
rm -rf ~/.gstreamer-0.10

That folder was recreated with new contents when launching Rhythmbox afresh on my machine.

Same problem. NO sound out of RhythmBox since upgrade to 64-bit Precise 12.04

Removing ~/.gstreamer doesn't work for me

Diagnostics as per earlier post attached

Cheers, Paul.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 64Bit via an upgrade from 10.04 I think. Anyway, i had the same issue.

To resolve it, after much messing on, I did this

Sound Settings ( Via the wee speaker in the top panel ) -> Output -> Speakers ( Built In Audio ) -> Mode:

It was set to Analog Stereo DUPLEX.

I changed this to

Analog Surround 4.0 Output

And all my music came back on.

Just so you know.
Peace.

All right, in order to rule out gstreamer or not, please try with gst-launch:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer-tools
gst-launch playbin2 uri=file:///home/joe/my-random-media-file.mpeg

This has been fixed in the oem projects, but I'm not sure if it's the same bug or not. There was a problem whereby fluendo wrapper was not properly escaping a bash variable. I'll open a new bug against the fluendo package.

I confirm on my freshly installed Ubuntu 12.04.4 amd_64. This bug affect me.
My music is stored on a NAS mounted via a autofs cifs mount.
It affect my mp3/ogg, in fact, every music file that is not lossless.
I also have the same bug on a freshly installed Ubuntu 13.10 amd_64
NB : I have a dedicated audio pci board (asus xonar dx).
NB : it seems to affect other gstreamer application, as I have the same issue with totem, but not with vlc.

Find a workaround in my case.
According to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/clementine-bugs/LpCK3Y81_q4 (last comment) it's a option in cifs mount that has changed in 3.7 kernel.
I hadded cache=loose in my cifs options list and now it's OK
