I did a test installation of Karmic on another partition and added the Ubuntu Audio Dev team PPA to get a update to pulseaudio 0.9.21. I was curious if the problem is fixed in a newer version.
I added this line to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to get my Subwoofer working with my Audigy 2 ZS.
disable-lfe-remixing = no
With this version the problems seem to be mostly gone... The highpitched sound comes up when I set the subwooferlevel in pulseaudio to minimum. But in general pulseaudio becomes usable for me. I dont know which sideeffects will come up with this dev version, but they cant be harder than this bug.
