Adding GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=auto to the grub config solved the issue for me. However, as soon as I install any fglrx driver (which worked on Trusty), X crashes ... (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1493888)
