I too thought it was sitting there doing absolutely nothing and spent quite a bit of time tearing my hair out because it looked hung.

It wasn't hung in my case, it was just deep in thought. After about a minute (creating one 40Gb LV as part of a two-partition 20Gb each VG) it finally came back to life. No idea what's going on, but the installer shouldn't just sit there with nothing on the screen leaving you waiting.
