Purging and reinstalling packagekit packages, then rebooting, did not help. Packages:
libpackagekit-glib11 packagekit packagekit-backend-apt packagekit-gnome python-packagekit

I'm using karmic updates, security, and backports.

Maybe I should try proposed.
