@doctordruidphd First of all, the fact that X starts (as you can see kdm) is a clear sign that you're not experiencing the same issue any more.
Furthermore, as I said in bug #548362, installing the driver from the nvidia installer must have left your system in a broken state (as you're not using the alternatives system any more). At this point I suggest that you either keep using the nvidia installer or that you perform a clean installation of Ubuntu and use only our packages.
