I ran into this issue today and found that disabling "Above 4G Decoding" and "Resizable BAR Support" in my BIOS stopped all the freezes, gnome-shell crashes, and "... /usr/libexec/gdm-x-session[2294]: (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (..." lines in the journal.

For reference, I have a Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite AMD motherboard with an Ryzen 3700X CPU. My GPU is an Nvidia 1660 Super (which definitely does not have support for resizable BAR). When those two options are set to "Auto" I get the freezes and crashes. I had to explicitly disable them.
