NOTE: I was able to fix this. As it turns out, my system was still running the 4.8 beta kernal, even though I had been through multiple updates via "software updater". uname -r showed that I wasn't where I thought I was. Also had an old grub, so updated that first, then selected the new kernel (4.13), then installed the NVIDIA security 384 updates, and now it's functioning.
I've assigned to myself, but I don't know how to close it. Looking around the web page, I don't see anything like that.
