Bug Description
Ubuntu 17.10 Jan 10, 2017. Ubuntu Software Update installed security patches today, and as a result, my system would not get to X session. Logging in via another computer using ssh, couldn't figure out what to do, so reinstalled recent backup. Was able to boot, but if I let the Software Updater install the Security updates for:
- NVIDIA binary driver -version 384.111
- NVIDIA CUDA runtime library
- NVIDIA OpenCL ICD
- Transitional package for nvidia-384
- Ubuntu base
Then I get: "API mismatch: the client has the version 384.111, but this kernel module has the version 834.90."
So I again reinstalled root backup, but this time I de-selected the NVIDIA updates and the Transitional package for nvidia-384 update, and was able to get up, but then I got the above error referenced: nvidia-384 384.90-0ubuntu3: nvidia-384 kernel module failed to build
So It appears I can't install the security updates, and will have to reinstall the root partition from backups.
What should I do to correct?
Thanks!

NOTE: I was able to fix this. As it turns out, my system was still running the 4.8 beta kernal, even though I had been through multiple updates via "software updater". uname -r showed that I wasn't where I thought I was. Also had an old grub, so updated that first, then selected the new kernel (4.13), then installed the NVIDIA security 384 updates, and now it's functioning.
I've assigned to myself, but I don't know how to close it. Looking around the web page, I don't see anything like that.
