This happens at random to me. The last time this happened, my screen saver was on because I was away. As I typed my password to get past the screensaver, I saw the error on my desktop.
I was running the following at the current time:
Electric Sheep screensaver (found at www.electricsheep.org)
Terminal (with SCREEN)
Firefox
Pidgin
