Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

It seems like this occurs at random times. I have had Amarok playing the 3 times that it did happen.

1) The release is Karmic Koala Beta.
2) I am not sure how to activate synaptic with this crash, so I am unable to determine the package version of compiz. The updates are up to date as 10pm last night Oct 16, 2009
3) I would think music would stop too, but this is not the case....still rockin'
4) As a result of the crash, maximize, minimize, close, show desktop, and the taskbar are not visible.
Hope that info helps!

Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

tzdata: installed version 2009n-1, latest version: 2009n-2

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

I experienced this crash, and I was not using Amarok at the time (haven't launched it at all, actually. I had Chromium Browser open, and had just closed a prompt to install additional language support after upgrading to Karmic.

This happens at random to me. The last time this happened, my screen saver was on because I was away. As I typed my password to get past the screensaver, I saw the error on my desktop.
I was running the following at the current time:
Electric Sheep screensaver (found at www.electricsheep.org)
Terminal (with SCREEN)
Firefox
Pidgin

Happens to me, too. Every day. In different situations. Compiz exits and gnome falls back to metacity standard WM and I find this in dmesg:

compiz.real[2401]: segfault at 10 ip 00007f67fb31af07 sp 00007fffb4889588 error 4 in libGLcore.so.185.18.36[7f67fa824000+dda000]

I'm using my laptop the same way I was using it with Jaunty (which didn't have this problem).

I have nothing valuable to add to the bug report but I wonder why this bug was marked as "invalid" by a "friendly bot"...
