I had this same problem with my KPC680 card. I am using a slightly newer version of NetworkManager with 8.10. I was able to resolve the problem by modifying the /etc/ppp/options file. The following lines should be changed to 0:
lcp-echo-interval 0
lcp-echo-failure 0
That stopped my machine from locking up when signal was weak or non-existent. I hope this helps you.
