The bug is already fixed!

Add the source
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/network-manager/trunk/ubuntu karmic main
to your /etc/sources.list and update the network manager to 0.8 RC2.

It is not in the official ubuntu karmic repos(-itory).
I hope that Lucid is released with (working) network manager 0.8 RC2 or newer!
