Ah... It turns out that an "update" of ubuntu disabled my wireless in the last few days.
So, yes, I agree this is probably the same as 290484.

I am also now booting with the hpet=disable kernel flag to solve a boot
hang problem. Whatever, NetworkManager now works for me, at least
where there is a network connection of one kind or another.
