Bug Description

Binary package hint: nedit

1. Copy worked under 8.10 on this machine.
2. Version is stock 1:5.5-3. Also tried nedit's 1:5 with same result.
3. Expected to be able to copy and paste in nedit.

4. Can copy using say gedit, and then paste in nedit. Just cannot copy in nedit

Incidentally, File Open did not work every time in 8.10, but seems to work in 9.04 - yea!

I have reproduced it under KDE 3.2.3 with Nedit 5.4 with Ctrl C - Ctrl V.
I can't reproduce it if I use the middle button of the mouse (X buffer?).
I can't also reproduce it under xfce3 (GTK application) even if I use
Ctrl C - Ctrl V.

So now I'm quite sure that this issue is related to clipboard management
of KDE (I CC the KDE debian mailing list)

Hi Alexandre,

I can reproduce #217121 with Sarge's NEdit and, more importantly, with
DDD. PRIMARY (mouse selection) does not seem to be affected.

This seems to be a Lesstif problem again, I have already submitted a
bug report for Lesstif:

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=993412&group_id=8596&atid=108596

What setup do you use on the machine where you could not reproduce it?
Is DDD installed on this machine? What is 'nedit -v' on this machine?

KDE seems to be innocent.

Yes it seems, I can't reproduce it with Nedit build with Open Motif.
So...

With Sarge's Nedit, I can reproduce it under KDE, but not under xfce3
(ctrl C Ctrl V from Firefox to Abiword)

Yes, but I don't know if there is no difference between a copy - paste
under KDE and a copy - past under gnome.

True; maybe the KDE guys can talk to the Lesstif guys to solve this?

In your Lesstif bug report, you say :

I can reproduce what you describe, but only if xclipboard is open.

>Strange, not?

I think it works like this: The clipboard (CLIPBOARD) does not work
very much different than the primary and secondary selection (PRIMARY
and SECONDARY). No data is actually copied on Copy, the app only
reports to some level of X11 that it has data other apps might find
useful. It has to name a callback function which is supposed to be
called once the data is actually requested by another app. This is
done to avoid expensive transmissions between client and server (which
may be on different continents).

Motif covers this with a number of convenience functions which makes
it a bit easier for the application to use CLIPBOARD (XmClipboardCopy
and friends). There is no need for the callback function, at least
this is how it is explained in my book, how it is done in NEdit and
how it actually works with Open Motif.

Enter xclipboard: This app *does* actually request the data put in
CLIPBOARD. It does that by means of a second callback function which
informs it that it no longer owns CLIPBOARD. Little xclipboard
immediately request the new content of CLIPBOARD from NEdit, and again
claims that it owns CLIPBOARD.

The request fails for some reason in our case, the transfer times out
and xclipboard gets the result XT_CONVERT_FAIL, which brings forth the
error message. CLIPBOARD is immediately reclaimed by xclipboard (still
with the old value) and NEdit happily requests and pastes *that* (A in
the above example). Without xclipboard, this would not happen, and
CLIPBOARD would remain claimed by NEdit.

If xclipboard does not run and the content of CLIPBOARD is only
requested by NEdit and DDD, everything works fine. As soon as
non-Lesstif apps enter the play, things get ugly because these apps do
similar things as xclipboard does, only without noticing the user of
problems.

The original description is matching my xclipboard story exactly:
1. Put text A in the clipboard (by copying from Konqueror into Emacs)
2. Start NEdit
3. Copy text B in Lesstif app
4a. Paste the clipboard to NEdit before five seconds are up.
4a. Paste the clipboard to NEdit after five seconds...

I reasign this bug from nedit (Copying and pasting can paste the wrong text)
to lesstif2.

Indeed, the bug can not be reproduced with a version of Nedit build with open
modif.

Well, the bug is new to me. After looking at other problems people have had
and the motif clones, this is probably not a new bug, just a new
manifestation of an existing bug. In any case, I have work to do and gedit
is good enough. If you want something tested let me know. I have used

Just so you know, I have nedit (and lesstif2, you probably want that
too) in my PPA [1]. I would appreciate it when you test it end tell me
if it solves your problem (and what how your experience with my package

I can second this bug. Running a new install of Ubuntu 9.04, AMD 64bit, Gnome desktop. Installed nedit from the standard repo and couldn't get copy/paste to work. Error was: Attempt to copy to unlocked clipboard.

Downloading the binaries from nedit.org didn't work for me (due to 64bit?). Solution that worked for me, was to download source, and compile and install.

On the Ubuntu side it required installing openmotif and some dev packages: libmotif3, libmotif-dev, libx-dev, libxt-dev, and perhaps a few more X11 dev packages (forgot the complete list). For the nedit source I had to add in -lXmu to the link line in the makefile.linux file.

After that compile worked fine. Tested copy and paste and they worked fine. Here is the new info from the Help->Version:

Those packages are from the multiverse repository, while nedit is in
universe. So this is not a general solution for nedit.

I confirm myself that the bug exist also in my new packages. I will look
into this, but help is appreciated. Also, upstream at nedit somebody

In klipper -> Configure -> Actions -> Advanced -> Disabled Actions for

@Радомир Јаковљевић: Did you deactivate klipper or any other clipboard manager to test? There is a known issue with lesstif2 that copy/pasting does probably not implement copy/paste according to spec. The AMD64 specific issue should be resolved.

Hey there.
I have not seen this issue with Ubuntu but I do see it with Redhat with KDE. Also the problem seems to show up after using something under the macros or tools tab. Anyways I found if you use the kwin --replace (bug fix for window re-size issue). Cut-n-paste works again. This is not a long term solution but could help some in the short term and may provide some more direction on where the issue lies.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 366835

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your bug report. Thanks in advance!

There is a new bug for 10.04, involving right-clicking with the mouse. Both
ddd and nedit have the problem, where right-clicking on a tab makes the
program sort of lock-up, requiring a CTRL-ALT F6 to get to a terminal and
kill-all. It is very annoying, since it happens when my mind is on other
things. The copy to scratchpad works most of the time, but not always.

I'm having the same type of problems with nedit in Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64.
Nedit works OK at first, then starts to malfunction - as you say, at inopportune times!
Copy-paste by highlighting and middle-mouse click, or by menu, starts failing to work within the same window.
Meanwhile, copy-pasting from elsewhere (eg xterm window) DOES work. On another tab, everything seems normal.
Today I tried to close down the offending tab by right clicking on it. The result was that the mouse pointer was "trapped" within the menu bar.
All I could do then was CNRTL-ALT F1 to do a text login and kill nedit.
But in the middle of that, X on F7 crashed and restarted.

From reports elsewhere, this kind of nedit/lesstif problem has been around for some time. I recently jumped from Hardy to Lucid with a fresh install. I am now finding that nedit is so unreliable I have to move to something else, even if I have to give up features (eg vertical selections) that I value.

OK it has just happened again.
At least I can correct the previous comment - the mouse pointer was trapped in the tabs area, not the menu bar.

The right-click on a tab problems is reported separately as a bug in lesstif, but appears to be an Xorg problem.

Looks like redhat have a patch for this particular bug in fedora, but judging by reversions there, it has not been fixed upstream in Xorg.

@ Richard M Smith: Could you please file a separate bug against libx11 with the information you provided here? Thanks.

As a general note to this bug report: it turned out that rewriting the lesstif copy/paste code is well above my abilities. On both the lesstif website (http://lesstif.sourceforge.net/#help) and in the debian bts 551853 I have stated that help is very welcome. I had somebody looking at the code who was knowledgeable about X and the clipboard, but haven't heard from him after some initial communication.

Maybe Ubuntu should compile nedit again against openmotif?

@Paul Gevers: OK I will do that.

BTW The X crash reported in #38 probably wasn't caused by the nedit/lesstif/Xorg problem.
I had the same behaviour without nedit running, and I had music playing every time the crash occurred - it looks like pulseaudio may be causing it. Sorry about the noise.

problem not fixed. nedit clipboard function stop working from time to time on my Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS (xfce 4.6).

when it fails to work, pressing Ctrl+C raises the following error in the console:

  NEdit warning:
  XmClipboardLock() failed: clipboard locked.

and pressing Ctrl+V raises another warning:

  NEdit warning:
  XmClipboardInquireLength() failed: clipboard locked.

I had experienced this issue many years ago and it still persisted in the latest LTS.

I have this bug also using Ubuntu 10.10 on a 2 core AMD 64 bit processor. I
can usually get copy and paste to work again in nedit by using it in another
program or sometimes in just another tab under nedit. It is a nuisance
