I'm guessing this is unrelated to https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/issues/296 since that applies every time you open a folder with a lot of thumbnails, so I'm going to assume this is fixed, please change back to New if you can reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 18.04 or Cosmic.
