I've created a PPA to provide a cleaner workaround and a much fresher minidlna version (1.1.2).

All thanks must go to Debian packaging work already maintained by Benoît Knecht at https://gitorious.org/debian-pkg/minidlna (and of course the upstream developer). I re-used those sources as they are, just added the ppa1 version and fed it to Launchpad.

To install:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:djart/minidlna
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install minidlna

I hope you'll find it useful, version 1.1.2 is much better than 1.0.24. It would also be nice if an Ubuntu developer picks it up and adds it back to the official 14.04 repo.
