I somehow got in by enabling, automatic login through shell. This is my gdm.conf.

On compiz front, it is falling again ...

kx@Kx-VMZ:~$ compiz --replace
Checking for Xgl: not present.
No whitelisted driver found
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

glxgears fps is 100 down from 800.
